What To See

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island of splendor whose sights are endless and diverse. Along the coast are its famed beaches: Unawatuna, Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Hikkaduwa. The hill country is studded with tea plantations. Some of its more popular destinations are the last ancient capital of Sri Lanka: Kandy and a scenic town named Nuwara Eliya. Sri Lankan is studded with places of unbelievable natural beauty such as Horton plains, Adam’s peak, Sinharaja rainforest and various National parks that also have an abundance of wildlife.

A visit to Ratnapura, the city of gems, will showcase some of Sri Lanka’s best kept treasures: gems and precious stones. Ambalangoda is famous for its painted wooden masks and puppet making. The country’s multiple religions have led to a vibrant culture where places of tourist interest include temples, kovils and churches that have been in existence for centuries. Sri Lanka’s iconic historic past can be seen in its archaeological cities of which several are UNESCO heritage sites: Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Galle Fort.

Tourists also like to explore the capital city, Colombo. Visit popular hangouts and shopping spots like Barefoot and Odel and the chaotic yet colonial looking neighborhoods of Pettah and Fort. Some of Colombo’s landmarks are Galle Face Green, Old Parliament, Torrington Square and World Trade Centre.

Colombo Attractions

The capital city is a favourite among tourists. Some of its attractions are the old fort originally built by the Portuguese, and the Lighthouse Clock Tower. Mount Lavinia beach is a favourite haunt among locals as well as foreigners.

Kelaniya Raja Mahaviharaya

Six miles from Colombo, the temple stands beside the Kelani River. This is one of the 3 places in Sri Lanka visited by Lord Buddha. The Kelaniya temple has reverent charm with its painted ceilings, Buddhist architecture and Buddhist depictions in sculpture.

Dehiwala Zoo

A welcome break from the concrete jungle, the Dehiwala Zoo is just a bit off Colombo. Shady pathways and arched bridges lead to the enclosures. The animals are enclosed in cages or airy enclosures. The Zoo has been in existence from 1936 and was originally a place where circus animals were trained. Some of the highlights are the elephant enclosure and the moss covered lake that is home to many birds and is surrounded by lush greenery. There is a petting corner where you can pet a python or a majestic eagle or watch a chimpanzee up to tricks. There is a diversity of animals from birds, primates, fish and reptiles. Each year the Zoo exchanges some of its animals with other Zoos in the world to widen the collection of animals. Tickets must be purchased at the gate and no polythene bags are allowed for the safety of animals.

A one and a half kilometer promenade built by Sir Henry ward in 1850s is one of the few community spaces in Colombo. Vendors sell colorful toys and kites and lighted gadgets. Great place to get an Isso or prawn wade or some tempered kadala in a bag.

What they say:

Ichirō Tsukada – Akiruno-shi, Tokyo 197-0833 Japan

We have just arrived back in Kyiv after the most incredible holiday in Sri Lanka. It has been a tour of a lifetime arranged by Maldiviana Holidays. The 6 days we spent truly added so much to our experience. Our only sadness is that we were not able to spend more time

Kateryna Berezhnaya – m. Kyiv, 03110 Ukraine

My family have asked me to thank you once again for our wonderful tour of Sri Lanka. You looked after us so nicely & we saw more than we had expected. Historical places were totally magnificent, to finish with that relaxing beach holiday, but so much more besides.

Blažek Ivánek – Praha 4, 14000 Czech Republic

We spent 2 weeks in Sri Lanka & Maldives, in the capable hands of Maldiviana. Everything worked without a hitch. Excellent experience and I can’t say enough about guides. They were knowledgeable, but more importantly, they understood our expectations every time.

Oksana Fyodorova – Voronejskaya obl, 247112 Russia
